Context and environment Bucharest is the capital of Romania and it has aprox. two million inhabitants. Located in a plane area of the south-eastern Romania, it is the cumulated centre of economics, politics and culture. Bucharest is the capital city, industrial, cultural, and financial centre of Romania. It is the largest city in Romania, located in the southeast of the country, and lies on the banks of the Dâmbovia River. Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the European Union by population within city limits. Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous in Romania and is one of the main industrial centres and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has a broad range of convention facilities, educational facilities, cultural venues, shopping arcades and recreational areas. The city proper is administratively known as the Municipality of Bucharest and has the same administrative level as a county, being further subdivided into six sectors.

Sick children or those with challenging social situation are being supported by the state and by NGOs. Children from all parts of Romania are hospitalized inside the paediatric units in Bucharest. Their condition may be due both to birth and to neglect inside their families living is remote geographic areas or facing critical socio-financial situations. No matter the cause, they lose their childhood inside hospitals where they usually spend very long periods of time. They become isolated, losing contact with their environment, families .o even the chance of going to school. Tuberculosis is still very wide spread here and even thou it can be cured, it still generates victims due to lack of information and perseverance in following the correct treatment. This is the picture of the main causes that generate the specific needs of the children targeted by our hosting program. On youngsters level, in Bucharest, voluntary service is usually a very abstract notion which they do not adopt easily. Many of them do not even know what the Civil Society is about. Through its programs, A.C.T.O.R. helps them understand the real importance of voluntary work, both for their own development and for the benefit of the community. A.C.T.O.R. supports and assists the youngsters in their weekly activity on clinical animation inside the paediatric hospitals or in their fund raising campaigns for the events dedicated to the same target, the children with health problems.

In the same time ACTOR is the creator of an intercultural education program for hundreds of children from Bucharest in schools and kindergartens. These children receive from the EVS volunteers through games and all kind of creative activities information about their original culture. In this way, after one year of weekly meetings with the EVS volunteers, the Romanian children have a clear understanding about how other children from different corners of Europe are living. The program’s name is Aici- Acolo, which means Here – There.
