ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION
One of the main statutory objectives of ELA SICILIA is the promotion of cultural and educational development, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion through recreational, cultural, educational, and pedagogical activities, as well as through intercultural exchanges and European projects with an educational and intercultural focus.
ELA SICILIA’s activities are therefore closely aligned with the principles and objectives of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC), particularly with its core values of solidarity, inclusion, and diversity. The activities carried out by ELA SICILIA contribute to fostering a just and fair society, increasing tolerance, intercultural dialogue, and solidarity. Education and culture are fundamental to building a fairer society, and learning about different cultures helps develop intercultural awareness and tolerance. The training events and cultural activities organized by the association help strengthen solidarity among peoples and promote respect for different cultures and traditions.
ELA SICILIA operates mainly in Palermo, a multicultural city with a rich cultural heritage and great potential. Palermo is a city full of opportunities and contrasts. For ESC volunteers, it will be both a place of learning and a setting in which to apply the knowledge they acquire. In Palermo, volunteers will have the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures and traditions and make a meaningful contribution. The activities carried out by ELA SICILIA allow people from different cultures to connect with Sicilian culture and to gain educational and formative experiences in an intercultural and experience-sharing context.
For ESC volunteers, this is an opportunity to engage actively in an intercultural environment, working alongside people from different backgrounds and experiencing Sicilian culture firsthand, learning to understand and respect it. Volunteers can become strong ambassadors for intercultural dialogue, and their presence will be a great asset to the organization, enhancing the cultural dimension of its activities.
Volunteers will be involved in the following activities at ELA SICILIA:
Organizing events, workshops, conferences, and training courses aimed at achieving the association’s social mission
Organizing educational activities for members to deepen their understanding of cultural and pedagogical topics
Organizing cultural, artistic, and recreational activities to promote intercultural dialogue and Sicilian culture
Organizing conferences, congresses, trips, and excursions in the educational, recreational, and cultural fields
Preparing proposals for public institutions and developing European projects in line with the association’s social mission
By participating in and contributing to ELA SICILIA’s educational and intercultural activities, young volunteers will develop skills in cultural and intercultural topics. They will be introduced to non-formal education, learning its principles, methods, and specific activities. Volunteers will be encouraged to propose and develop small personal and group projects to enhance initiative and autonomy. They will have the opportunity to improve self-confidence, communication, public speaking, and time-management skills. Volunteers will also gain hands-on experience with the principles of non-formal and informal education through active participation in ELA SICILIA’s activities, guided by a dedicated tutor.
Participation in local cultural activities will help volunteers integrate more effectively into the local community. The intercultural nature of the activities will give them the opportunity to learn about different cultures and develop greater intercultural awareness and understanding of the cultural diversity that forms the European mosaic. This experience also contributes to fostering their sense of European citizenship.
