This initiative, organized by YouNet APS as part of the European Solidarity Corps programme, provides young people with the chance to take part in long-term international volunteer projects in Bologna and its surrounding areas. The program is designed to promote inclusion, intercultural exchange, and active citizenship, particularly targeting young individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from rural or marginalized communities.

Volunteers engage in a variety of educational, cultural, and solidarity-driven activities that support local communities, champion European values, and contribute to personal and professional growth. By taking part in these initiatives, volunteers play an active role in fostering a more inclusive and united society, while empowering themselves to become leaders of change both in their local environments and across Europe.

Objectives:

Intercultural Dialogue & European Identity

  • Strengthen awareness of Europe’s values, cultures, and opportunities.
  • Pay special attention to young people from rural and peripheral regions with limited access.
  • Through volunteering, foster dialogue across cultures, increase knowledge of the EU, and reinforce community bonds.

Inclusion & Community Cohesion

  • Address social exclusion by supporting vulnerable groups in rural and peripheral areas.
  • Volunteers design and deliver cultural, educational, and recreational activities.
  • These actions nurture solidarity, encourage intercultural and intergenerational exchange, and inspire volunteers to become advocates for inclusion.

Empowering Youth through Volunteering

  • Involve young Europeans with fewer opportunities in meaningful volunteer projects.
  • Provide safe, welcoming environments that encourage participation and active citizenship.
  • Volunteering builds confidence, skills, and connections, while contributing to a more just and cohesive society

In May, my four-month ESC volunteering experience ended. I had never been on such projects before, so it was my first time. A new country, new people, a new experience – everything was new. At first, going was a bit scary, because I had never been abroad for so long, but at the same time I was so excited about it What I can say for sure is that Italy amazed me. This is my first time in this country and I have never regretted coming here. During this time, I significantly expanded my social circle and met many new people. Over time, these people became my friends and now I have many friends from all over the world! Also, in my free time from volunteering, I had the opportunity to travel around the country and visit many cities . I saw many beautiful views , saw famous architectural monuments , tasted delicious food , was at the sea and near the mountains. I was even in Sicily! Fortunately, I had few problems adapting to life in a different culture and environment. Thanks to my mentors and coordinators, I received a lot of support. They always helped me if I had any questions or difficulties and I am incredibly grateful to them for that .
