Elena Sofia's experience in Portugal

19.08.2025

Now that my project in Portugal has come to an end, I can say that I have lived one of the most complex and, at the same time, most rewarding experiences of my life. My daily routine unfolded in four different languages, with people from all over Europe ranging in age from 1 to 96 years old, just 20 minutes away from a wonderful European capital, accompanied by the background sound of passing trains and ocean waves.

I experienced Portuguese culture from the inside and compared its characteristics with those of each of my housemates’ different nationalities. I learned a new profession, working for the first time in the social sector in close contact with children and the elderly. I traveled a lot, both with others and on my own, discovering historic cities and landscapes, and I admired the spectacular waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

During these months in Lisbon, I had the opportunity to come into contact with realities completely different from my own — environments, dynamics, and people I would probably never have had the chance to engage with otherwise. Every new activity and every new encounter challenged me and taught me a great deal about the world and about myself.

Now, looking back, I cannot help but think about the many difficult moments as well as the beautiful memories, and feel satisfied to have lived such a full and complete experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
