Gianmarco's experience in Finland

09.11.2023

Hi everyone, my name is Gianmarco, I’m 22 years old, and I’ve just returned from Tyrnävä, Finland, where I spent three unique months thanks to the European Solidarity Corps.

I’m writing these lines one week after my return, with a slightly cooler head but still feeling nostalgic for the experiences I’ve just lived—memories that will remain forever etched in my mind.

My role was as a collaborator in the municipality’s Department of Art, Culture, and Recreational Activities, as well as a youth worker. In practice, I was involved in organizing events, festivals, and activities aimed at engaging young people within the community. It was a formative experience both for me and for the young people involved. I had the opportunity to share my lifestyle and Mediterranean culture, while also learning a great deal from the young people and my colleagues. Different customs, but with the right mindset I was able to try many new things that I would have never imagined.

I formed unique friendships with people from all over the world, and together we visited amazing places. Nature—the green of the forests and the blue of the rivers blending with the white of the first snow—made the atmosphere even more magical. I saw the Northern Lights, visited historical sites of great value, and experienced life like a true Finn: from sauna sessions and swimming in icy waters to walks in the woods collecting mushrooms and wild berries.

I recommend that anyone reading this at least consider taking part in an experience like this, because I believe it has immeasurable value for personal growth. Above all, there is only a small window in life when you can truly challenge yourself in this way—so don’t overthink it and enjoy the journey!
