Lorenzo's experience in Portugal

Even the sky cries for our farewell. Thank you for the future saudade.
Like in the best “romantic movie clichés,” it is on a day of heavy rain (the sky crying for our goodbye) that my volunteer experience at AJD comes to an end. It is now time to reflect on the last six months, during which I was completely immersed in Portuguese culture—a dream I had for many years and finally realized!
The feeling is one of nostalgia, or, in other words, saudade. Among the most recent activities, I want to highlight the two weeks of Easter holiday programs with the children, which left a particular mark on me. They made me happy for the trust I gained, the unforgettable games, the Easter-themed crafts, and even the football matches in the garden. The most beautiful part of all this is that I was able to overcome my fears, and I know that one day all these experiences will be useful to me, both personally and professionally.
I cannot forget the children who joined me at the play center (Ludoteca) at the end of each school day, to whom I extend a special thank you. I want to highlight their pure and free energy, their “Portuguese lessons,” the games, and so much more. It was an honor! I list them alphabetically: Afonso, Benedita, Carlota, Felipe, João Miguel, Martim, Santiago. I will never forget you; thank you all for the wonderful afternoons, and I wish you the best for the future! Ah… and I hope you won’t forget me either! Playing every day with “the bald guy” is not an everyday event, right?
Darque will also remain in my heart—the parish that was my home for the last six months. I will remember the outings to the local bars, especially the legendary Cervejaria Nova York, which felt like a second home, where, together with the locals, I watched several football matches and drank beer (at such a convenient price that I never wanted to wake up from this beautiful dream!). I also want to mention the restaurants, supermarkets, and Praia do Cabedelo, which offers a breathtaking ocean view and the most beautiful sunsets I’ve seen.
Regarding travel opportunities, I want to highlight my three-day visit to São Miguel Island, the largest in the Azores archipelago. I was amazed by the nature, the climate, the mountains, the volcanoes, the local cuisine, and the Atlantic Ocean. I also visited Galicia, a region of incredible beauty worth exploring, especially walking the legendary Camino de Santiago.
In summary, the main goals I set when I accepted this challenge have been achieved: learning to speak Portuguese, traveling and discovering northern Portugal, enjoying Portuguese gastronomy and its secrets, and having the opportunity to host some of my friends and family in the city of Porto.
I am truly proud to have chosen AJD to carry out this project as a European Solidarity Corps volunteer, and I made the most of every opportunity! Finally, I want to sincerely thank the entire AJD team for their trust and daily support. I wish AJD all the best for the future and for new adventures with the next volunteers.

O céu também chora a nossa despedida. Obrigado pela futura saudade!
Como nos melhores “clichês” de filmes românticos, é num dia de muita chuva (o céu está a chorar, pela despedida) que chega ao fim a minha experiência como voluntário na AJD. Desta forma, chega também o momento de fazer um balanço relativo aos últimos seis meses em que estive inteiramente mergulhado na cultura portuguesa, um sonho que tinha há muitos anos e que tornei realidade!
O sentimento é de nostalgia, ou dito de outra forma, de saudade. Das atividades mais recentes, realçar as duas semanas de atividades de férias da Páscoa com as crianças, que me marcaram particularmente.
Deixaram-me feliz pela confiança que adquiri, pelas brincadeiras inesquecíveis, pelos trabalhos decorativos e alusivos à época, assim como os jogos de futebol no jardim. O mais belo de tudo isto é que eu próprio consegui ultrapassar os meus medos e sei que um dia todas estas vivências me serão úteis, quer na minha
vida pessoal quer profissional.
Não posso ainda esquecer as crianças que estiveram comigo na Ludoteca todos os finais de dia, após as suas atividades escolares, deixando-lhes um agradecimento especial. Destaco a sua energia pura e livre, as “aulas” de português, as brincadeiras, etc., foi uma honra! Enumero por ordem alfabética: Afonso, Benedita, Carlota, Felipe, João Miguel, Martim, Santiago. Nunca vos esquecerei, agradeço a todos pelas
tardes tão bem passadas e desejo-vos o melhor para o futuro! Ah… e espero que também não se esqueçam de mim! Brincar todos os dias com o “careca” não é um acontecimento comum, certo?
Darque também ficará no meu coração, a freguesia que foi a minha casa nos últimos seis meses.
Recordarei as idas aos bares, em particular a mítica Cervejaria Nova York, que foi como uma segunda casa, em que na companhia de habitantes locais assisti a vários jogos de futebol e bebi cerveja (a preço tão acessível, que nem quero acordar deste lindo sonho!). De referir ainda os restaurantes, supermercados e a Praia do Cabedelo que possui um panorama oceânico encantador e onde admirei o melhor pôr-do-sol.
Mencionando as viagens que tive oportunidade de realizar, destaco a visita de três dias à ilha de São Miguel, a maior ilha do arquipélago dos Açores. Impressionou-me a natureza, o clima, as montanhas, os volcões, as iguarias gastronómicas e o Mar Atlântico. Falar-vos ainda da Galiza! Uma região de uma beleza incrível, que vale a pena visitar e fazer o lendário Caminho de Santiago.
Em suma, os principais objetivos que defini quando abracei este desafio foram alcançados: aprender a falar português; viajar e conhecer o norte de Portugal; deliciar-me com a gastronomia portuguesa e os seus segredos e ter a oportunidade de receber alguns dos meus amigos e familiares na cidade do Porto.
Estou verdadeiramente orgulhoso por ter escolhido a AJD para desenvolver este projeto como voluntário do CES (Corpo Europeu de Solidariedade) e, de facto, aproveitei ao máximo!
Por último, naturalmente agradecer a toda a equipa da AJD pela confiança e apoio diário. Desejo à AJD a maior sorte para o futuro e para as novas aventuras com os novos voluntários/as.
