Monica's experience in Portugal

09.09.2025

After three and a half months spent in an eco-community in Portugal, I can say that I have just lived one of the most transformative experiences of my life! Not only did I have the opportunity to discover a new professional field by working as a funding volunteer—a role that allowed me to develop valuable skills and enter an area I am passionate about and want to continue exploring—but above all, I was able to immerse myself in a completely new lifestyle and environment.

Moving from a private home to a community where every space is shared 24/7 was a significant change, but one I am truly glad I embraced. I discovered how quickly bonds are formed when living in such close contact, how deeply you get to know people, and how strong the connections can become, even knowing that sooner or later everyone will go their own way.

I realized that yes, my personal space is important, but sharing my life with others is even more so. That everyone has their own path, that people come in and out of your life, but no one ever truly leaves: everyone leaves a mark, and you leave a piece of yourself in everyone you meet. Being in daily contact with people from all over the world, with very different backgrounds and stories, pushed me to broaden my horizons and open my eyes to the endless possibilities life can offer.

At the end of this experience, I not only have more skills, but also a renewed desire to explore—something I don’t believe I could have found in any other context.
